Why Chinese Running Shoes?
Share
If you've spent any time in running forums or YouTube rabbit holes lately, you'll have noticed it: Chinese running shoes are everywhere. Brands like Li-Ning, Anta, Xtep, 361° and Qiaodan are producing carbon-plated racers and super trainers that go toe-to-toe with the biggest names in the sport. Often for a fraction of the price.
This isn't hype. When Selemon Barega won the 2025 Seville Marathon in a pair of Li-Ning Feidian 5 Elites, it wasn't a fluke. Chinese brands had been quietly closing the gap for years, and now they were standing on top of the podium in a race long dominated by Nike, Adidas and Asics.
So why start a whole store around them? And more importantly, why should you trust them?

The honest truth: most Chinese carbon shoes are rubbish
Here's something most articles on this topic won't tell you. For every legitimate Chinese performance brand, there are dozens of no-name factories pumping out "carbon plate" running shoes that are, frankly, no good.
They look the part. Aggressive rocker, flashy foam, a listing that says "carbon fibre plate." But the reality is often a nylon plate passed off as carbon (or no plate at all), midsole foam that goes flat within 100km, inconsistent sizing, and zero quality control. The flood of knockoffs and counterfeit super shoes coming out of China is a real problem. It's the biggest reason runners are still sceptical of Chinese brands, and honestly, it's fair enough.
A carbon plate is not a magic ingredient. It's one component in a system: plate geometry, foam chemistry, stack, rocker, upper fit. Getting that system right takes serious R&D, athlete testing, manufacturing discipline and still big brands can mess it up. The random brands don't have it at all. The best Chinese brands do it as good as the brands you've run in for years.
The brands that are the real deal
The legitimate Chinese performance brands aren't startups in a garage. Li-Ning was founded in 1989 by Olympic gymnast Li Ning and is one of the largest sportswear companies in the world. Its Feidian racing line — Ultra, Elite and Challenger tiers — is engineered specifically for marathon racing, with its Super Boom midsole foam, full carbon plates and race-proven results at the highest level of the sport. The Red Hare training line produced the greatest of all time marathon training shoe, the Red Hare 9 Ultra (quoting local runner Avi Singh).
These are shoes with podiums behind them, not just marketing.
Our promise: only the best of the best
This is where Bramble Bay Athletic comes in.
We're not importing everything with a carbon plate and hoping for the best. We do the filtering so you don't have to. Every brand and every model we stock has to earn its place: proven racing or training pedigree, performance foams, real R&D behind it, and value that makes sense for Australian runners. If a shoe doesn't clear that bar, it doesn't make it onto our shelves. Simple as that.
Think of us as your mate who's already done the hundreds of hours of research, so you can buy with confidence instead of rolling the dice on a marketplace listing.
Coming soon: Qiaodan
Which brings us to some news. Alongside Li-Ning, we're excited to announce that Qiaodan will be joining the Bramble Bay Athletic range very soon.
If you haven't heard of them: Qiaodan was founded in 2000 and has grown to over 6,000 stores worldwide. (Yes, the name is the Chinese transliteration of "Jordan" which is a bit of brand history that sneakerheads love, and a story for another post.)
Qiaodan's Leili 2.0 series has become one of the most talked-about shoe lines in the running geek community, delivering the performance of premium Western super trainers at roughly 60% of the price. The line includes the base model (daily trainer), the GT (super trainer) and the MAX (super max cushion trainer). Think of it like the Vomero 18, Vomero Plus and Vomero Premium line up from Nike. I loved my Vomeros but it looks like I won't be buying Nike for a while.
That's exactly the kind of brand we built this store for: legit, proven, and almost impossible to find through mainstream Australian retail. Until now.
What's next
Over the coming weeks we'll be sharing deep dives on each brand and model we're launching with, plus honest wear-test reports from our local run club here in Brisbane's 4017 area.
